Position Purpose: Reporting to the Manager of Health & Safety, or their designate, this position is responsible for radio communications, and the operation of all equipment in the Site Control Office. Responsible for controlling vehicle and pedestrian access to the Zoo site as well as ensuring the protection of Zoo property, visitors and staff through alarm systems, CCTV and access control measures. This position is also responsible for assisting and providing support in implementing the Strategic Plan.

Monitors all radio communications on site to ensure compliance with the Zoo radio communications policies. Operates site radio base station and the site telephone switchboard and deals promptly with all inquiries from public and staff.

Initiates and monitors staff responses in emergency situations. Takes appropriate action as required under the Zoo’s emergency policies and procedures.

Monitors CCTV system and reports any unusual or suspicious activities to their supervisor.

Controls service access to site for all vehicles, staff and visitors. Enforces the property removal requirements in accordance with Zoo policies.

Maintains the voice mail system in good working order. Ensures all messages are passed on to the relevant personnel.

Maintains an inventory of all radio communications equipment and issues portable radios to Zoo staff.

Makes recommendations on the suitability of Control Centre equipment, and trains personnel on the Site Control Office systems.

Co-ordinates movement and support of Zoo personnel in the event of an emergency. Issues assignments to Security Services staff.

Assists with the development of communications policies and procedures.

Answers quires from staff and the public in an efficient courteous manner.

Prepares written reports as required.

Reports to the supervisor the absence of or any defect in any equipment or protective device that they are aware of and which may endanger themselves or another staff member.

Reports to supervisor any contravention of the Ontario Health & Safety Act.

Ensures all accidents and hazards are reported to supervisor immediately.

Work in a safe manner at all times in compliance with Health & Safety, WHMIS and Toronto Zoo policies and procedures.

Follows all branch instructions.

Attends appropriate training courses as required.

Performs other related duties as requested by the Manager or their designate.

Must possess a diploma in Law Enforcement, Law & Security, Criminology, Emergency Services Communicator/Call-Taker, or the equivalent, along with a minimum of two (2) years related experience.

Must have the ability to learn the geography, facilities, and services of the Zoo site.

Must be capable of learning and understanding Zoo policy, standard operating and emergency response procedures, bylaws, alarm systems and enunciator panels, emergency telephones, fire extinguishers and power failure procedures.

Must possess a working knowledge of the Occupational Health & Safety Act, security practices and be familiar with the Trespass to Property Act and relevant sections of the Criminal Code of Canada.

Must be knowledgeable in the use of computerized programs and systems, including CCTV, alarm systems, radio and telephone equipment and access control systems and Microsoft applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Email).

Must possess excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal skills.

Must be capable of training new personnel in the operation of the Site Control Office.

Must be able to work with minimum supervision.

Must be able and willing to work shifts, weekends and holidays as scheduled.

Must possess a Security Guard and Private Investigators License under the Private Security & Investigative Services Act.
