Job Description

Overview

Security is more than monitoring a building—it is about creating welcoming environments, helping people, and keeping Calgary’s communities safe. As a General Duty Security Guard at Paladin Security Group, you will serve as a visible, reassuring presence across retail centers, office towers, commercial facilities, and residential properties.

This contract position is ideal if you enjoy staying active, working directly with the public, and applying calm communication skills to resolve challenging situations. Whether you are building experience toward a career in law enforcement or looking for a fulfilling role in public safety, this position provides hands-on experience and professional training.

What Success Looks Like

In this role, success means balancing proactive physical safety with excellent customer service. You will act as both an approachable ambassador for our client sites and a reliable responder when incidents occur.

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

  • Conduct Proactive Patrols: Walk indoor and outdoor site perimeters to maintain a visible security presence, inspect access points, and ensure site safety.
  • Provide Customer Service: Greet patrons, offer directions, assist visitors, and manage lost and found inquiries with a friendly, professional attitude.
  • De-escalate & Manage Conflict: Resolve peaceful or disruptive situations using effective verbal communication, and coordinate with emergency services (police, fire, EMS) when necessary.
  • Respond to Emergencies: Calmly react to security alarms, medical incidents, policy infractions, and unauthorized access or trespassing.
  • Complete Incident Reports: Write clear, detailed, and accurate shift logs, liability reports, and incident logs using computer applications and two-way radios.
  • Deliver Basic First Aid: Provide emergency first aid assistance when required until medical professionals arrive.

Position Requirements

Must-Haves

  • A valid Alberta Security License (or the ability to obtain one prior to employment).
  • Legal authorization to work in Canada.
  • Availability to work flexible, rotating schedules, including day shifts, overnight shifts, weekends, and holidays.
  • Physical ability to walk approximately 18–20 km per shift and navigate stairs regularly.
  • Strong verbal and written English communication skills to complete detailed incident reports and communicate effectively via radio.
  • Sound judgment and the ability to remain calm and decisive during high-pressure situations with minimal supervision.

Nice-to-Haves

  • Current Standard First Aid & CPR certification.
  • Previous experience in security, customer service, retail, or hospitality.
  • An interest in pursuing a future career in public safety or law enforcement.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Pay Rate: $17.00 – $21.00 per hour.
  • Professional Development: Access to comprehensive training programs, including First Aid, De-escalation, Use of Force (UOF), and Management of Aggressive Behaviour (MOAB).
  • Career Advancement: Pathway programs designed to support career development within security leadership or transition through our Paladin to Policing initiative.
  • Workplace Culture: Join a team recognized as a Great Place to Work Certified organization.
