Job Description

The impact you will have: As a Substitute Property Monitor, you will help ensure our campuses remain safe, secure, and welcoming by providing essential coverage when regular staff are unavailable. Your vigilance, professionalism, and ability to respond to changing needs will support the daily operation, security, and appropriate use of district facilities, helping create an environment where students can learn, staff can teach, and our community can thrive.

As a Substitute Property Monitor, you will be assisting with the leading and managing of property oversight and be responsible for (but not limited to):

  • Monitoring the use of district properties, ensuring spaces are used appropriately, safely, and in accordance with district policies.
  • Ensuring the security of buildings, grounds, and facilities, including locking/unlocking buildings and responding to safety concerns.
  • Inspecting facilities, grounds, and equipment to identify maintenance, safety, or security issues and reporting them promptly.
  • Coordinating with custodial, maintenance, and site staff to support daily operations and resolve property-related concerns.
  • Assisting with event support, including verifying permits, monitoring site use, and helping ensure smooth setup and cleanup.
  • Documenting incidents, property issues, and site usage, maintaining accurate records and reports.
  • Responding to inquiries from staff, families, and community members in a professional and customer-service–oriented manner.
  • Ensuring compliance with safety procedures, district regulations, and emergency protocols across all assigned properties.
  • Supporting the enforcement of district rules, addressing misuse of facilities, and escalating concerns as needed.
  • Representing the district with professionalism, maintaining a visible and helpful presence at school sites and district properties.

SB 848 Child Safety & Employment Disclosure Requirement

Effective January 1, 2026, in accordance with California Senate Bill 848 (School Employee Misconduct/Child Abuse Prevention Act), applicants for employment with San José Unified are subject to enhanced child safety, training, and employment disclosure requirements.

Under SB 848, schools are required to strengthen background vetting procedures and obtain employment history information related to allegations of egregious misconduct involving students. Former employers may be contacted to release records regarding substantiated findings of misconduct as permitted by law. Failure to provide complete and accurate information regarding prior educational employment or relevant misconduct findings may result in disqualification from the hiring process or withdrawal of an offer of employment.

SB 848 also expands mandated reporter requirements and requires annual child abuse prevention training for employees and certain volunteers by July 1, 2026. All employees must comply with district-adopted child safety policies, including procedures for supervising and protecting students.
