Job Description

Provides quality safety services, including maintaining a safe environment conducive to learning and contributing to the educational process for students. Public Safety Officers assist with loss prevention, monitor security cameras, handle parking and traffic control, conduct foot patrols, and respond to emergencies. Performs essential functions personally, through others, or in conjunction with designated personnel or outside entities.

Essential Functions Statement(s) To fully meet job expectations, the incumbent must perform each function in a fully acceptable manner.

Regularly patrols campus to maintain a safe and secure campus environment.

Protects and secures community members, property, and facilities

Enforces all rules in accordance with the approved policies and procedures

Assists campus Police Officers when necessary and relieves officers in non-criminal matters.

Prevents unlawful acts, suppresses disturbances, and provides service aid relief

Responds to calls concerning crises, accidents, crimes, and other emergencies or security concerns

Cooperates with police officers in sharing information and assistance

Documents and writes effective incident reports

Establishes good public relations with the campus community and various public sectors

Enforces parking and traffic regulations in accordance with Austin College policies. This may include moving/lifting traffic control barricades, working and reporting traffic accidents, violations, infractions, etc.

Provides building security, including locking and unlocking doors.

Provides campus transport for injured students or those needing special assistance.

Performs routine tests of fire alarm systems. Responds to, silences, and resets alarms within campus buildings.

Performs routine inspections of elevators, emergency telephones, and fire extinguisher units.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS: (The minimum knowledge, skills, abilities, licenses, certifications, and behaviors necessary to perform the essential functions of the job at a fully acceptable level.)

KNOWLEDGE (Defines the mental aspects of the job. Knowledge is obtained through education, experience, training, licensure, certification, or through a combination of the aforementioned.)

Minimum: Any combination of education and experience equivalent to completing secondary education or any other combination of education, training, or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Demonstratable knowledge of methods and procedures related to public safety activities, including patrol, crime prevention, traffic control and emergency operations. Knowledge of factual and sequential recall principles and procedures.

Preferred: Two years of experience in security, law enforcement, or corrections. Other expertise and/or training in positions involving safety and security operations, as a security officer or in a related field, may be accepted when augmented by an extensive education component.

LICENSE or CERTIFICATION (To include, but not limited to: State requirements, e.g., counselor or nurse; professional certification in a specified discipline, e.g., Certified Public Accountant.)

Vehicle driver’s license valid in the State of Texas and subject to approval from Austin College’s automobile insurance carrier.

Certified in Basic First Aid, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and the use of Automatic Emergency Defibrillators (AED) by accredited licensing body.

SKILLS (The application of knowledge by the manual, verbal, or mental manipulation of data, words, people, or things necessary to fully meet job expectations of the essential functions.)

To fully meet job expectations, the incumbent must:

· utilize Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) or appropriate alternative software to the extent required to effectively perform the essential functions including maintaining proper records and documentation;

· communicate effectively using a variety of styles and techniques appropriate to inform or persuade the intended audience;

· use a 2-way radio in a proficient manner;

· operate basic alarm and access systems.

To fully meet job expectations, the incumbent must have the ability to:

· work a variable schedule;

· work evenings, weekends, and holidays and be on call, when necessary, 24 hours a day;

· work under pressure and or adverse or highly intense situations while maintaining a calm and professional demeanor and control emotions under stress;

· anticipate and resolve problems using sound judgment, along with excellent conflict resolution and communications skills;

· identify alternate and constructive courses of action;

· make accurate observations and remember details of situations and individuals;

· maintain confidentiality regarding sensitive matters;

· control sudden, violent, or extreme physical acts of others and exhibit rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously;

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The following represent the physical requirements of the essential job functions: Physical activities required are finger dexterity necessary to operate equipment used in the position, talking, seeing (occasionally in extremely low light situations) and hearing. Walking, sitting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling and minimal unassisted lifting (up to 40 pounds) associated with the job duties is required. Jogging or running may be necessary in emergency situations. Must wear full Police Duty Gear (approximately 25 lbs.) for the full duration of each scheduled shift.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The noise level found in this position can vary from moderate office noise to loud noise at special events. The duties of the position require at least 90% of the work shift spent outdoors with exposure to all weather elements.
