Heritage Park is Canada’s largest living history museum and offers visitors a chance to experience life in Western Canada from the 1860s to the early 1950s. The park features historical buildings, costumed interpreters, working antiques, and various exhibits that provide insight into the region’s past.
Department Overview:
The People & Culture Department is a shared services hub that supports Heritage Park’s people, culture, and workplace excellence through Human Resources, Volunteer Resources, Payroll & Benefits, Health, Safety & Environment (HSE), and Protection Services. The team delivers integrated services essential to the Park’s success, including employee and volunteer experience, talent acquisition and development, workforce planning, payroll and total rewards administration, and compliance with employment and safety legislation. It also leads health, safety, and environmental programs, oversees Protection Services and emergency readiness, and fosters a secure, inclusive environment for all. Through collaboration, accountability, and service excellence, the department advances the Park’s mission, strengthens organizational culture, and ensures Heritage Park remains a safe and engaging place to work and volunteer.
Job Overview:
As a frontline member of the Security team, the Security Guard provides customer service in a courteous, professional, and friendly manner to both internal and external clients. Security Guards perform all security, public safety, emergency, and fire prevention duties to the highest standards while contributing to a welcoming and safe experience for all visitors.
Responsibilities:
Safety & Security Patrols and Incident Response

Conduct regular foot and vehicle patrols of the Park, including buildings, parking lots, public areas, and restricted zones.

Identify, assess, and respond to safety/security risks or hazards.

Monitor for theft, vandalism, unauthorized access, or emergencies.

Respond to alarms, disturbances, medical emergencies, and other incidents using sound judgment.

Provide first aid/CPR as required and replenish first aid/fire safety supplies.

Accurately record patrols, incidents, and hazards in daily reports.
Customer Service & Public Interaction

Uphold a professional appearance and demeanor, reflecting Heritage Park’s standards.

Greet guests, staff, volunteers, and contractors warmly while maintaining order.

Provide directions, answer inquiries, and offer information about events and safety guidelines.

Provide courteous support during special events, including parking and crowd control.

Assist with lost-and-found procedures and reunite guests with lost items or persons.

De-escalate conflicts with empathy and fairness.
Asset Protection, Access Control & Security Monitoring Systems

Manage access for staff, contractors, vendors, and visitors through gates and controlled areas.

Issue and track radios, keys, and other access tools, ensuring sign-out/sign-in procedures are followed.

Patrol and secure buildings, exhibits, and equipment; arm/disarm alarms as required.

Escort cash handlers and monitor security systems, including motion sensors, access controls, and fire alarms.

Inspect and maintain security vehicles, reporting issues promptly.
Compliance, Documentation & Professional Conduct

Complete daily logs, occurrence reports, and shift handovers accurately and consistently.

Follow Heritage Park policies, security legislation, and safety protocols at all times.

Participate in mandatory training (First Aid/CPR, WHMIS, emergency response, de-escalation).

Model professionalism, ethical conduct, and respect for Heritage Park’s mission and values.

Support COR certification and contribute to safety briefings, drills, and inspections.

Required Qualifications:
- Minimum completion of secondary school education

A valid Alberta Security Services License is mandatory for all security guard roles. A minimum of six months of security-related experience is required for full-time security roles

A minimum of 1 year’s client service experience is required. Working in an attraction setting will be an asset.

Demonstrated experience with conflict de-escalation and customer-service is essential

A valid Alberta Driver’s License or Graduated Learner’s Permit with a clean abstract is required.

Fluency in English is essential; ability to communicate in additional languages would be an asset

Demonstrated strong interpersonal and communication skills in a client-faced setting

Ability to work independently and in a team environment

All successful candidates will be required to go through Police Information Check as a condition of employment.
Special Clothing and Equipment:

Appropriate security officer uniform will be issued by Heritage Park. Washing and maintaining uniforms in a presentable fashion will be the employees’ responsibility.

Heritage Park provides footwear allowance as per the Collective Agreement with CUPE Local 37

Individuals will be required to supply their own appropriate outdoor weather protective clothing (gloves, toques, hats) it must be black or navy blue in colour and without visible logos.
Special Working Conditions:

The position will be exposed to weather extremes and as the position works both indoors and outdoors, with much of the work taking place outdoors with exposure to a variety of weather conditions including conditions of darkness.

These positions will require the incumbents to engage in physical activities such as standing or walking for prolonged periods of time.
Hours of Work:

The standard hours for this position are 40 hours per week; on a regular reoccurring schedule
-
There are various scheduled hours of work, including shift work, and special events coverage to ensure 24 hours per day, 7 days per week security coverage.
