Job Purpose

Perform non-sworn and un-armed security duties to provide a safe environment for faculty, staff, students and visitors.

Position Description

The Fixed-Term Special Events Patrol officer supports the public safety mission of the Stanford Department of Public Safety performing a variety of security and public safety functions, primarily on a fixed assigned post. Special Events Patrol officers will typically be assigned to provide security at a specific location such as a university library or the Stanford “Dish” area; responsibilities will include monitoring the areas for suspicious and/or illegal behavior, safety hazards, unlocked/unsecured doors, and opportunities to assist the public. Special Events Patrols may be performed by foot, motor vehicle or other DOT approved method of transportation, etc. based upon operational needs of the specific assignment. Security posts may require standing for extended periods of time in inclement and potentially hazardous / dangerous situations. Other assignments and duties may include providing directions and assistance to community members and visitors; posting no-parking signs, deploying cones, flares, setting up and moving barricades and other traffic control equipment; and administrative/office work. Special Events Patrol Officers will be in direct contact with the Stanford Community, which provides the opportunity to provide excellent customer service by answering questions, providing directions, promoting community awareness and providing other assistance to community members and visitors.

The ideal candidate must be physically fit to perform the essential job functions of the position and be able to adapt physically and psychologically to frequently changing needs and priorities. Strong customer service and interpersonal skills are imperative, as is the ability to remain calm and communicate effectively, including using a two-way radio, during stressful situations. The ability to solve problems, a high level of energy, enthusiasm and flexibility are key characteristics of the successful incumbent.

Special Events Patrol officers wear a uniform and a duty belt with limited gear. The position requires moderate to strenuous activity including walking, standing, climbing, pushing, pulling and lifting. The term position is a benefits-eligible position; however, specific assignments and shifts may vary from week to week depending upon department need. Schedule adjustments may be made with little or no notice.

Work is performed primarily on-site. The position requires shift work to include working day, swing, or night shifts (including holidays), as well as a rotation which could include regular weekend work. Mandatory overtime is also required from time-to-time. Outdoor work is required, sometimes in inclement weather.

This position differs from that of a Public Safety Officer (PSO) in that a PSO is expected to possess a higher level of knowledge and understanding of department and university operations. This position differs from that of a casual Special Events Patrol Officer (SEP) in that, as a benefits-eligible position, this Special Events Patrol officer will be expected to respond to campus during an emergency or critical incident, if requested or assigned.

Core Duties

General Safety and Security

Special Events Patrol officers may be assigned to specific campus locations such as a university library or other post to provide security for a period of time. While on such an assignment, employees will be responsible for the following tasks:

  • Patrol designated areas of the campus looking and listening for suspicious and/or illegal behavior, safety hazards, unlocked doors, and opportunities to assist the public, etc.; notify the appropriate personnel of issues that need to be addressed.
  • Monitor assigned post/beat for security and public safety concerns.
  • Utilize a department-issued police radio and/or mobile phone to effectively communicate with other Public Safety personnel and/or the Public Safety Operations Desk reporting status and potential concerns, requesting information or support, and obtaining instructions from supervisors and/or the Operations Desk. Log on to OmniGuard/Safe Zone during each assigned shift and clearly report hazardous conditions, medical emergencies and/or suspicious circumstances via department-issued communication devices.
  • Provide information, directions and assistance to persons needing assistance.
  • Provide physical security at Stanford buildings and property.
  • Clearly report hazardous conditions, medical emergencies and/or suspicious circumstances via a two-way radio and/or mobile phone.
  • Maintain a daily activity log of activities.
  • Other duties, as assigned.

Foothills

Special Events Patrol Officers may also be assigned to work at the “Dish” open space area. When assigned to this detail, employees will be responsible for some/all of the following tasks in addition to general security responsibilities:

  • Open and close the “Dish” open space” walking/running trail including the Matadero Trail.
  • Patrol the Dish open space area for potential hazards, people in need of assistance and persons who are not complying with the posted regulations.
  • Provide assistance to the visiting public including providing directions and general information as well as responding to medical or other emergencies and calling for appropriate emergency response using the assigned two-way radio.
  • Staff specific posts within the Open Space area including the guard shack at the Stanford gate or other posts as assigned.
  • Maintain a daily log of events and/or incidents occurring during one’s assigned shift.
  • Enforce parking regulations on Stanford Ave and the surrounding neighborhoods
  • Perform other safety and security functions in the Foothills, as assigned.

Special Event Security and Traffic Control

Special Events Patrol officers may be assigned to support special event security operations in addition to other duties. While supporting special event security operations, employees may have some or all of the following responsibilities:

  • Provide safety, security, traffic control, logistics support and other services during planned and unplanned events.
  • Prepare and/or post event/parking/traffic control signs for special events and details on campus. Remove signs after the event has concluded.
  • Deploy barricades, cones and other traffic control equipment per directions as part of event setup. Remove barricades and other safety equipment after the event.
  • Drive various size trucks/vehicles including forklift to transport equipment, including towing barricade trailers.
  • Problem-solve to provide the best experience for attendees of events while also ensuring public safety.

Minimum Education and Experience Required

High school diploma or GED or combination of education and relevant experience.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Exceptional customer service skills; ability to interact well with the public and maintain a positive, professional attitude even under trying circumstances.
  • Ability to assimilate and understand information in a manner consistent with the essential job functions and translate information accurately and effectively to others. Ability to follow verbal and written directions.
  • Effective oral / written communication skills including the ability to interact with a diverse group of people.
  • Ability to use sound judgment and independence in determining priorities and handling situations.
  • Flexibility and calmness in dealing with the public even under stressful conditions.
  • Knowledge of and/or ability to learn and apply a variety of University and departmental policies.
  • Ability to keep sensitive information strictly confidential at all times.
  • Ability to use and/or learn to use two-way radio for communication.
  • Maintain a professional appearance and demeanor.
  • Familiarity and/or ability to learn the Stanford Campus.
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
  • Desire to learn, accept and promote the Department’s Core Values.
  • Ability to maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities.

The expected pay range for this position is $22.12-32.21 per hour.
Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.

Special Requirements

  • Applicant must pass a complete background investigation including a search of local, state, and national files for criminal history.
  • Must be able and willing to respond to and work large-scale special events as well as unplanned critical incidents, sometimes with little advance notice.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*

  • Frequently stand/walk, sit, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, operate foot and/or hand controls.
  • Frequently use a telephone/radio, write by hand.
  • Occasionally kneel/crawl, climb (ladders, scaffolds, or other), reach/work above shoulders, grasp forcefully, sort/file paperwork or parts, scrub/sweep/mop, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh <40 pounds to a height of 18-24 inches repeatedly.
  • Rarely perform desk-based computer tasks
  • Vision no more than 20/100 correctable to 20/30 in each eye with normal color vision.
  • Normal hearing abilities in each ear.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Shift work (days, evenings, weekend, holidays).
  • Requires 24-hour response availability seven days per week for emergency situations.
  • May be exposed to outdoor work, inclement weather as well as potentially hazardous conditions.
