The Security Lead – Nights position is to ensure a safe and secure environment for guests, team members, animals, property and assets while still providing exceptional guest experience. As a Security Lead – Nights, you will have the opportunity to tap into your curiosity and collaborate with some of the most innovative and diverse people in San Antonio. Here, you will make an impact by:
- The primary responsibility of the Ranger/EMT Lead is to successfully maintain the safety and security of San Antonio Zoo, its employees, and guests.
- Under the direction of the Director of Guest Experience and Guest Experience Ranger Manager will be responsible for observing their assigned duties, correcting, and reporting all situations relating to safety and security.
- The position requires a flexible schedule and must be available weekdays, weekends, holidays, and occasionally after hours.
- Maintain an accurate knowledge base of all of the policies and procedures of San Antonio Zoo and the Ranger Department. Use good judgment based upon prior knowledge, experience, and current laws to resolve any situations that are not specifically indicated. In any situation where the course of action is not clear, the Ranger Officer is to refer to and adhere to our Emergency Response Plan (ERP).
- Will assist in training the EMT/Ranger Staff.
- Assist the Ranger department in the enforcement of all company and department policies and procedures, by way of accurately reporting according to policy.
- Complete accurate reports of all situations that involve the safety and security of the guests and employees in a timely manner and distributing all reports to all department managers involved in the situations.
- Consistently provides exceptional internal and external customer service in alignment with our GUEST model.
- Survey Zoo grounds, including doors and gates, to identify any safety hazards and determine they are secure.
- Maintain access control and only permit authorized persons to entry property.
- Monitor surveillance cameras.
- Provide reporting and investigatory information on an ongoing and as needed basis.
- Maintain knowledge of current emergency policies and procedures and respond to emergencies in accordance to policy.
- Ensures the proper care, maintenance, and accountability of any San Antonio Zoo equipment used by Ranger, including but not limited to cameras/CCTV, radios, computers, and vehicles.
- Any and all other duties as assigned.

Your Skills and Expertise
To set you up for success in this role from day one, the San Antonio Zoo recommends the following skills/qualifications:
- High school diploma or general educational degree (GED) and one-year related experience and/or training OR equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Must have previous experience in one or more of the following security, security dispatch, loss prevention, and law enforcement, military, or public safety.
- One year leadership role preferred.
- One year or more of EMT training preferred.
- Experience working in a high-volume customer focused venue or attraction is preferred.
- Excellent interpersonal and oral communication skills.
- Proven experience in and passion for guest service.
- Ability/demonstrated experience with evaluating situations, making decisions, and reacting quickly and calmly in emergency situations.
- Ability to interact effectively and calmly with angry or emotional guests and employees during intensely aggravated circumstances.
- Ability to write clearly and informatively.
- Basic computer skills and knowledge.
- Ability to maintain guest, employee, and organization confidentiality.
- Must be able to walk (80 acres) and/or stand up to 10 hours daily in adverse outdoor conditions such as cold, rain, snow, or heat.
- At times during busy seasons, must be available to work overtime and/or double shifts.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
- CPR/AED (adult, child, infant) and Basic First Aid certificate within three months of hiring.
- This is a full-time or part-time position which requires working weekends, and holidays.
