ABOUT THIS POSITION

Phoenix Public Library serves a diverse clientele of over 4.8 million people, with a central library and 16 branches. The library offers collections in multiple languages, a full range of cutting-edge electronic resources and customer focused public service.

The Municipal Security Guard responsibilities include patrolling and observing the activities of persons in and around City facilities.

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Patrols buildings, building grounds, and parking lots to observe unusual behavior and to prevent vandalism or illegal use of substances.
  • Enforces correction of infractions through verbal warning, expels unruly persons, and may temporarily detain more serious offenders for proper authorities.
  • Observes the behavior of people, customers and monitors their actions for compliance with rules, regulations, and City ordinances related to security.
  • Mediates disputes and refers matters of enforcement to appropriate law enforcement.
  • Answers routine inquiries and direct visitors to appropriate areas.
  • Escorts personnel from buildings and facilities after hours.
  • Completes and maintains log entries and field contract reports of incidents that occur.
  • Receives personal and confidential information from departments and determines appropriate access levels to be assigned to City employees and contractors.
  • Prevents unauthorized access to restricted areas.

The Library Department is currently hiring for multiple full-time and part-time opportunities for branches across the City of Phoenix.


IDEAL CANDIDATE

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Ability to:

  • Write reports of daily activity and detailed Incident reports.
  • Problem solving skills and the ability to help customers who are dealing with very difficult and emotional situations.
  • Calmly speak to and de-escalate customers who are intoxicated.
  • Understand and apply routine security surveillance techniques and principles.
  • Analyze situations quickly and objectively; react effectively and efficiently in urgent or emergency situations.

SALARY

Pay Range: $20.02 to $32.62 per hour.

Hiring Range: $20.02 to $31.06 per hour.

  • Hiring range is an estimate of where you can receive an offer. The actual salary offer will carefully consider a wide range of factors, including your skills, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, training, and internal equity.


Internal Only:
Please understand that this is pay grade 340. If selected, your salary offer will be based on the applicable promotion or demotion worksheet in accordance with the City Pay Ordinance.

  • Promotions occur when the last two digits of the pay grade increase.
  • Demotions occur when the last two digits of the pay grade decrease.
  • Lateral transfers occur when there is no change to the last two digits of the pay grade.
  • When there is a change in the first digit of the pay grade, there may also be a change to your classification or unit.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School diploma or general education degree (GED) required.
  • Demonstrated ability to do or learn to do security, as shown by prior training and experience.
  • Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
  • All finalists for positions are subject to a criminal background check applicable to the department or position.
  • Candidates who receive a conditional offer of employment must be fingerprinted and will have their fingerprints used to check the Criminal History Records of the State of Arizona Department of Public Safety and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Any records returned will be reviewed to determine the candidate’s suitability for the job.
  • Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver’s license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.

Work and Environmental Conditions Requirements:

  • Some positions require certification by the Police Department in the use of non-lethal security equipment, such as handcuffs and "pepper spray," by the end of the probationary period. Such certification must be renewed on an annual basis.
  • Some positions require to be certified to use CPR, general first aid and AED.
  • Working irregular hours, second and/or third shifts, weekends, holidays, and evenings will be required.
  • Working in various weather/environmental conditions (extreme heat, rain, blowing dust, high pollen count, insects, etc.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The minimum qualifications listed above, plus:

  • Previous experience in the military, police/corrections or security.
  • Bilingual – Spanish

Experience with:

  • Providing excellent customer service in person, over the phone, and via email.
  • Using a computer in a Microsoft Windows environment to include Outlook Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
