Summary:

The School Safety Officer (SSO) is responsible to assist in maintaining a safe and secure school environment by monitoring school grounds, controlling access, enforcing school policies and procedures, responding to safety concerns or emergencies, and supporting emergency preparedness drills.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Proactively support administrators and professional staff in fostering and maintaining a safe, secure, and academically supportive environment.
  • Display ethical and professional behavior in working with students, parents, school personnel, and outside agencies associated with the school.
  • Show high visibility and interact positively with students, staff, and visitors.
  • Patrol and monitor school facilities and surrounding areas to ensure the safety and well-being of students and to deter, detect, report, and stop violations of law and/or district policies.
  • Monitor school building and camera system for illegal entry and breaches in security.
  • Detect, investigate, and report unauthorized or suspicious persons, vehicles and activities.
  • Respond to emergency situations and take appropriate action in accordance with established guidelines.
  • Assist with school mandatory drills.
  • Provide traffic and parking control for the purpose of maintaining efficient traffic flow and use of parking lots by students, staff, and visitors.
  • Fill in the Security Greeter position during absences.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

To successfully perform this position, a person must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The qualification requirements listed below represent minimum levels of educational achievement, training, skill, and/or ability necessary.

Must do the following:

  • Possess a high school diploma.
  • Have the ability to communicate with students, staff and visitors and develop a positive rapport with each.
  • Have the aptitude or competence for assigned responsibilities.
  • Demonstrate sound security techniques and procedures in daily operations.
  • Have proficiency in written and verbal communications.
  • Use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls, and talk and hear.
  • Sit, stand, walk, stoop, kneel and crouch.
  • Have specific vision abilities to include close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Have the ability to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
  • Have PA Act 67 School Security Training certification.*
  • Have First Aid, CPR/AED and Stop-the-Bleed certification.*
  • Have Safety Care certification. *
  • Maintain PA State certification.
  • If not current, certification must be obtained within six (6) months of employment.


Reporting Relationships:

  • Reports directly to the designated Campus Safety Officer
  • Works cooperatively with administrators, supervisors, staff, parents, and students to perform job responsibilities as outlined.


Terms of Employment:

  • Ten (10) month position (187 days), eight (8) hours daily.
  • Salary and benefits in accordance with the Non-Bargaining agreement (Supervisory, Technical, and Confidential Employees). Hourly pay range: $22.46-$30.48
