Job Description

Reports to: Director of Guest Services/CFO

Coordinates with: All Departments

Summary of Responsibilities:

This individual is a highly motivated team member responsible for the safety and security of the zoo. Secures premises and personnel by patrolling property and inspecting buildings, exhibits, equipment, and access points.

EPZ Team Member Responsibilities
  • To uphold the Zoo’s mission of fostering an appreciation of wildlife and the environment that will inspire active participation in conservation.
  • Have knowledge and understanding of all Zoo policies and procedures.
  • Adhere to Zoo confidentiality standards as outlined in the employee handbook regarding all information entrusted or known by you in relation to customers, animals, business, employees, volunteers, incidents and other sensitive information.
  • Assist in ensuring safety, cleanliness and efficiency in all areas of the operation of the Zoo.
  • Ability to interact and communicate cordially with the public.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities
  • Secure premises and personnel by patrolling property, monitoring surveillance equipment, inspecting buildings and exhibits, equipment, and access points and permitting entry as needed.
  • Monitor all assigned areas every hour following the established roving pattern and contact the proper Zoo or government agencies in case of any emergency.
  • Prevent losses and damage by reporting irregularities, informing violators of policy and procedures and restraining trespassers.
  • Complete reports by recording observations, information, occurrences, and surveillance activities, interviewing witnesses, and obtaining signatures where applicable.
  • Complete the daily security log at end of each shift.
  • Maintain the organization’s stability and reputation by complying with legal requirements and the safety and operational standards established by the government and the AZA.
  • Work closely with the animal and maintenance departments, reporting anything that may cause a hazard to any animal and/or guests and personnel.
  • Occasionally control zoo traffic by directing drivers.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all information regarding guests, animals, business, employees, volunteers, incidents or any other sensitive information.
  • Communicate effectively with both adults and children in group and individual settings. Greet guests and exercise professionalism at all times.
  • Willingness to work weekends, occasional holidays, and occasional extra hours for special events.
  • Must be available for evening and overnight shifts as needed.
  • Perform other duties/responsibilities as assigned by directors.

Required Skills
  • Excellent observational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to remain calm in high-pressure situations.
  • Ability to learn the layout of the property and buildings.

Education and Experience
  • High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • Security guard training/certification preferred.
  • Previous experience a plus.

Pay and Identification

Identification: Two forms of valid ID are required. Ability to pass background and child abuse clearances.

Compensation: $16.50 – $18.00/hour
