Job Description

The School Safety Officer is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for students, staff, and visitors. This role involves monitoring school grounds, enforcing safety protocols, responding to emergencies, and fostering a positive and supportive atmosphere. The ideal candidate will demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills, situational awareness, and a commitment to ensuring the well-being of the school community.

Key Responsibilities:

Campus Security:

  • Patrol school grounds, buildings, and surrounding areas to deter and detect unauthorized activities or individuals.
  • Monitor entry points to ensure only authorized personnel and visitors have access to the school.
  • Conduct regular checks of doors, windows, and gates to ensure they are secure.
  • Respond promptly to incidents, emergencies, or disturbances on school property.
  • Assist in the implementation of emergency protocols, including evacuation, lockdown, and shelter-in-place procedures.
  • Provide first aid or basic medical assistance as needed until professional help arrives.
  • Collaborate with school administrators to develop and enforce safety policies and procedures.
  • Conduct safety drills in accordance with district and state guidelines.
  • Report safety hazards, maintenance issues, or potential risks to appropriate personnel.
  • Build positive relationships with students, staff, and parents to promote a sense of community and trust.
  • Act as a resource for conflict resolution and de-escalation strategies.
  • Provide guidance and support to students regarding safe and responsible behavior.
  • Maintain accurate records of incidents, patrols, and safety checks.
  • Prepare detailed reports on security-related activities and incidents.
  • Communicate effectively with school administrators and local law enforcement as needed.
  • Participate in ongoing training to stay updated on best practices in school safety and security.
  • Attend workshops, seminars, and certification programs as required.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent (required); additional education or training in law enforcement, criminal justice, or a related field is preferred.
  • Prior , or a similar role is highly desirable.
  • Strong understanding of safety and security practices, including emergency response and conflict resolution.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to remain calm and make sound decisions under pressure.
  • Proficiency in using surveillance systems and other security technology.
  • Valid driver’s license and, if required, appropriate certifications (e.g., first aid, CPR, or security guard license).

Work Environment: The School Safety Officer will primarily work on school grounds, both indoors and outdoors, in varying weather conditions. The role may require standing or walking for extended periods and responding to situations that could involve physical exertion.

Pay: $18.93 – $20.77 per hour
