Job Overview

GENERAL SUMMARY:

Under general supervision of the Security Shift Supervisor, the Lead Civilian Security Officer ensures that every trainee is given a mentor to provide maximum opportunity to demonstrate that they can do the job. The Lead Officer must exhibit the potential for leadership which with development creates a promotable candidate for shift supervisor.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Performs all duties and activities of a Civilian Security Officer at various locations across the airport.
  • Performs in the capacity of a Lead Civilian Security Officer to produce a highly trained and positively motivated Civilian Security Officer capable of meeting or exceeding performance standards.
  • Improve the Division’s performance and conduct screening process through on-the-job training and observation.
  • Assist with the execution and support of an appraisal system by providing documented measurement of probationary performance and conduct.
  • Provides equal and standardized training to all probationary and veteran officers and provides remedial training in those areas where deficiencies are identified.
  • Helps to ultimately increase the overall efficiency and effectiveness of the Division by introducing a climate of professionalism and competency that is representative of the DPS standard.
  • Leads officers in daily assignments while performing in the capacity of a Lead Civilian Security Officer.
  • Assists with supervisor responsibilities to ensure that all operational and logistical assignments are performed in an efficient manner. This may include items like coordinating personnel assignments and provide assistance and guidance to security officers.
  • Ensures compliance with Airport and Department policies, state and federal regulations and the DFW Airport Security Plan (ASP).
  • Assists Supervisors and Civilian Security Officers in maintaining daily vendor/escort logs and that logs are correct, complete and legible; enters activity data into system.
  • Review reports and informs supervisors/management of security violations and incidents.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Completion of high school curriculum or equivalent.
  • Two (2) years security or law enforcement experience. Experience may be substituted by two (2) years of military service in the United States Army, Air Force, Navy, or Marines with honorable discharge.
  • Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience may be substituted for the above.
  • Has not been convicted of a Class “B” misdemeanor within the last ten years or any offense greater than a Class “B”.
  • Must be able to meet all initial and recurrent training requirements in accordance with Title 14 CFR part 139 and administrative Policy AO.014.01, Ground Vehicle Driver Training for Air Operations Area (AOA) within 30 days of assignment to a driving position and before being permitted to operate the vehicle without the direct supervision and presence of a co-operator qualified under this requirement.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain Criminal Justice Information Services clearance.
  • Possession of a valid Class C driver’s license.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to train and indirectly supervise employees.
  • Knowledge of security related issues.
  • Ability to communicate verbally one on one and in group settings.
  • Ability to speak, read, and write English proficiently.
  • Ability to pass mandatory TSA required security training.
  • Must attend and pass all required Field Training Officer/Supervisory training.
  • Ability to use a computer and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to take various types of reports either by telephone or in person.
  • Ability to receive and process information of a sensitive or confidential nature with discretion, tact and diplomacy.
  • Ability to follow established procedures and ensure compliance.
  • Ability to maintain records and prepare reports by telephone or in person.
  • Ability to understand and adhere to the Airport Board’s safety, security and fire protection policies when performing assigned work on Airport property.
  • Ability to complete all DPS/ASD mandated training.
  • Ability to pass and maintain any required certifications.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:

  • This is a designated safety sensitive position as defined in DFW Airport’s Drug and Alcohol Administrative Policy and Procedure. Applicants selected for this position will be required to pass a drug test prior to employment and to submit to drug screening on a random basis during the length of their employment in the safety sensitive position.
  • Must obtain a Security Identification Display Area (SIDA) Airport Identification/Access Badge (badge) in accordance with Department of Homeland Security Transportation Security Administration (TSA) requirements in Chapter 49 of the Code of Federal Regulations Part 1500 et al., and DFW Airport’s Airport Security Program within thirty (30) days from date of employment and maintain qualification for a SIDA badge upon each badge renewal.

EFFORT:

  • Frequently works outside subject to all weather conditions.
  • Subject to walking frequently and often for varying distances.
  • Occasionally climbs into, out of and searches under vehicles.
  • Occasionally works in awkward positions such as kneeling, stooping or squatting.
  • Occasionally uses near-visual acuity in inspecting vehicles and SIDA badges.
  • Occasionally uses far-visual acuity in judging distance of moving vehicles.
  • Exchanges information in person and over radio and telephone.
  • Drives to locations on Airport property, including the Aircraft Operations Area.
  • May be required to work longer hours should a large-scale incident occur on or near the Airport, increasing the requirement on Airport Security Division resources.
