Job Summary

The Security Officer I reports directly to the Security Manager and is responsible for protecting Cook County Clerk’s Office (“CCCO”) employees, customers, visitors and property at any of the CCCO’s city and suburban locations as assigned. The position is also responsible for maintaining a safe working environment, assisting County partners, and local facility security officers with resolving any and all threats, and serving as the first point of contact during emergency and other immediate response situations. Overall, the Security Officer I is the CCCO’s first and primary line of defense against danger, and the selected Candidate must be willing to put her or himself in harms way to protect others in the event of any number of dangerous or emergency situations.

Essential Job Duties

  • Observe and monitor CCCO office locations so as to ensure that employees, visitors, customers and property are safe and secure at all times.
  • Collaborate and partner with appropriate resource staff (i.e. Cook County Sheriff’s Department, 69 West Washington Security, etc.) to observe, and as necessary, remove unauthorized or disruptive individuals who jeopardize the safety or well-being of CCCO staff, customers or property.
  • Properly secure sensitive operational areas, such as cashiering and other monetary-intensive locations throughout the CCCO.
  • Use CCCO authorized methods and techniques to surveil and monitor potential threats or suspicious individuals so as to ascertain habits, patterns or behaviors which could harm CCCO staff, customers or property.
  • Draft, contribute to, and prepare detailed incident reports involving any physical altercations, medical emergencies or other necessary events which may trigger the need for a written and/or verbal report of what occurred at a particular CCCO location.
  • Assist with the collection and maintenance of visitor data, as well as the screening and/or authorization of visitors to the CCCO executive offices and other designated locations.
  • Collaborate and communicate with other governmental and private agencies to ensure the safety of all CCCO staff, visitors, customers and property.
  • Routinely review and monitor assigned location for indications of fire or other safety hazards and take swift action to resolve and neutralize such threats as quickly as possible.
  • Provide basic intake and preliminary customer service assistance to CCCO customers while ensuring that the primary focus is always on the safety of the office.
  • Ensure all CCCO-issued items (i.e. communication devices, clipboards, security items, etc.) at all times, and report any lost, missing or stolen items to an immediate supervisor as soon as discovered.
  • Direct CCCO visitors and customers to appropriate locations for non-CCCO matters (if known, and as applicable).
  • Perform daily, weekly and/or monthly safety checks to ensure that all necessary safety items (fire extinguishers, locks, panic buttons, etc.) are fully functional and completely operative.
  • Participate in the coordination and facilitation of office safety trainings (i.e., cpr, aed, evacuation drills, etc.) as necessary.
  • Update immediate supervisor and fellow CCCO security staff of any pertinent changes, individuals or information which could adversely impact the safety of the office, staff or property.
  • Remain current on all updated CCCO security policies and procedures, including those governed by partner agencies and management groups for the particular office location.
  • Provide protection for all CCCO employees, visitors, and when applicable, customers.
  • Secure sensitive areas (such as large quantity cash areas, executive offices, and other high-security locations).
  • Manage, supervise and facilitate designated facets of CCCO evacuation plans, and other emergency situation plans.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or a General Education Development test certificate.
  • Possession of a VALID Permanent Employee Registration Card (PERC), which must be updated and kept current as necessary while employed.
  • One (1) years of full-time paid work experience as a security and/or a law enforcement officer.
  • Must be at least 21-years of age at the time of hiring.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associates Degree or higher in Criminal Justice or closely related field from an accredited college or university.
  • Possession of a Current Armed or Unarmed Illinois Security Guard License
  • Three (3)-years of full-time work experience as a security and/or law enforcement officer.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Well-versed in First-Aid, CPR and AED techniques.
  • Ability to operate electronic communication devices (i.e. walkie-talkies, landline phones, etc.) for the purpose of organizing and coordinating security details and assignments.
  • General familiarity with desktop computers for the purposes of preparing incident reports, locating information online, and other basic data entry and computer usage.
  • Basic written and verbal communication skills, as well as the ability to write in a clear and coherent manner.
  • Ability to exercise common sense and sound judgment as it relates to possible security.
  • Problem-solving skills, including the willingness to obtain assistance as necessary and when needed.
  • Ability to remaining calm and composed during adverse and emergency situations, some of which may require assisting and keeping others calm.
  • Ability to understand and execute responsibilities required by Cook County’s Fire, Bomb Threat, and Evacuation procedures.
  • Objectivity and lack of bias when working with fellow CCCO employees, customers, visitors or constituents.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be capable of standing and sitting for long periods of time while remaining alert and aware of all surroundings.
  • Must be capable of walking for both long periods and over long distances.
  • Must be able to physically restrain individuals (with the aid of handcuffs and/or a baton if and when necessary).
  • Must be able to lift up to 50-pounds safely.
  • Must be willing and able to provide First-Aid, perform CPR, and utilize an AED if and when necessary.
  • Must be able to walk up and down several flights of stairs as needed.
  • Must be willing and able to properly wear the uniform and required tools to give a professional appearance and facilitate a rapid response.
