Title: Security Guard
CHARACTERISTICS OF CLASS: Under direct supervision, responsible for ensuring patron safety and preventing theft and damage to Chicago Park District property by controlling Chicago Park District grounds and facilities or guarding a fixed post. Patrols ground on foot, motorized patrol or vehicles as assigned. Provides security at Chicago Park District sponsored events.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: Patrols parks, beaches, pools and all Chicago Park District facilities. Guards against illegal entry, vandalism, fire hazards, theft and other violations or hazards. Performs security tasks at locations specified or as directed by supervisor. Controls crowds. Using judgment and discretion, intervenes in potentially troublesome situations to prevent or reduce the likelihood of criminal activity. Responds to emergencies. Prepares written arrest and other reports. May write parking tickets when deemed necessary. Testifies in court. Performs other related security duties as required and/or specified by the Chicago Park District Security Standard Operating Procedures Manual.
Special Notice: Security Guards working full time for a law enforcement agency and employees in a secondary employment capacity with the Chicago Park District will be required to adhere to the secondary employment hourly limits of their law enforcement agency. Additionally, the Director of Security Services Department reserves the right to limit hours of work for part time guards to ensure that guards are alert, attentive to duty and to safeguard their personal safety and safety of the public.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Training and Experience: Applicants must be a full time law enforcement officer in good standing employed by a city, county, state police department in the State of Illinois or a Cook County correctional officer. Cook County Correctional Officers or Law enforcement officers retired within the past 2 years from a city county, or state police department in the State of Illinois must have left the department in good standing. Full time law enforcement officers must continue to be in good standing while employed with the Chicago Park District. Probationary periods with the Cook County Corrections or police departments must be complete. Must be without medical restrictions and continue to be without medical restrictions while working for the Chicago Park District.
Certification Requirements: Must be certified by Illinois Local Government Law Enforcement Officers Training Board as a law enforcement officer or Cook County correctional officer. Retired law enforcement officers qualified under federal law to carry a concealed weapon must be certified annually by the Illinois Training Board's Concealed Carry Course and Certification. Must have a valid State of Illinois Driver’s license.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of procedures governing arrest, search and seizure, civil rights, evidence of criminal procedure and use of firearms; ability to write clear and accurate reports; ability to testify in court; ability to apply first aid; skill in communicating and interacting with others.
