The Role and Our Team
The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero is leading the government’s mission to make the UK a clean energy superpower – increasing energy security, protecting bill-payers and tackling climate change.
The talented professionals in the Communications Directorate are shaping and telling this story, with clear and creative communications to reach our audiences with original content. This includes visits that help ministers to meet the people delivering this mission and see the impact of our policies.

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced communicator to join the Ministerial Visits Team. The team is fast-paced, supportive and fun. We work highly collaboratively across all communications disciplines, with post holders given the opportunity to lead communications for and build knowledge of many policy areas. You will gain exposure to the whole Ministerial team.

Essential criteria
You will need to be able to work flexibly across different communication and policy priorities to support colleagues during busy periods and as Government priorities shift.
You will have experience working across multiple communications disciplines, including a good sense of what makes an eye-catching visit with engaging visuals that work on digital and broadcast media.
You will need excellent political judgement to spot communications opportunities and risks, as well as a sharp news sense, being alert to the wider government agenda and vision.
You must have the ability to quickly build strong relationships, and the confidence to engage directly with colleagues at all levels and senior stakeholders.
You will have excellent verbal and written skills as you will be responsible for producing submissions for Ministers, as well as briefing them on visit and stakeholder engagement opportunities in person.
You will work with policy teams, Private Offices, Special Advisers and wider communications colleagues across the Department to build strategic visit and engagement plans that showcase the work of Government and the Private Sector.
You must therefore be able to work at pace and often to very tight deadlines and be great at prioritising work.
You will have the ability to grasp complex issues quickly and think on your feet when dealing with difficult logistics, changes in plan, or challenging stakeholders.
This position involves regular travel across the UK for recces and accompanying Ministers on visits.

Office attendance
The Department operates a discretionary hybrid working policy, which provides for a combination of working hours from your place of work and from your home in the UK. The current expectation for staff is to attend the office or non-home-based location for 40-60% of the time over the accounting period.
