Pay: $19.71 to $21.61/hour as base rate plus any shift applicable premiums

The Position

The Gardiner Museum is seeking a professional and customer service-oriented individual to support the Museum’s special events and daily operations in the role of part-time Security Guard. This will include various shifts including days, evenings, and weekends.

Reporting to the Senior Manager, Facility Operations, the ideal candidate will be detail-oriented and collaborative individual with exceptional communication skills. As an important member of the Security Team, the candidate will play a key role in maintaining the safety and security of the Museum, its staff, and the public.

Responsibilities & Position Overview

The Security Guard plays a vital role in ensuring the safety, security, and smooth operations of the museum. This role requires a strong presence, attention to detail, and excellent customer service skills. Security Guards are responsible for monitoring museum premises, enforcing policies, assisting with events, and responding to emergencies.

Key Responsibilities

Security Office

· Ensure the Security Office is staffed and secured at all times.

· Attend shift meetings in the Security Office at the beginning of each shift.

· Monitor surveillance systems, alarms, emergency response protocols, and access control.

Front Desk

· Staff the Front Desk when the front doors are unlocked, unless an Operations Associate is present.

· Provide access control and wayfinding assistance at the front entrance.

· Ensure alcohol is not brought outside the building while being served in the museum.

Special Exhibition Gallery

· Staff the Special Exhibition Gallery during museum hours when required.

Event Assignments

· Monitor food and drink service areas to prevent unauthorized consumption in gallery spaces.

· Enforce alcohol containment within licensed areas, such as the Front Plaza.

· Assist with additional event assignments as needed.

Patrols

· Conduct hourly patrols at the top of the hour during museum operating hours.

· Record mandatory patrols in the Fire Watch log as required.

· Perform thorough security sweeps across all museum areas, including mechanical spaces, back-of-house hallways, entrances, and construction zones.

· Report on maintenance issues promptly to the Senior Manager, Facility Operations.

Security Duties

· Provide first response to emergencies.

· Administer First Aid and CPR when required.

· Document emergency situations and incidents for record keeping.

· Enforce museum security policies and procedures.

· Follow safety guidelines during renovation periods.

· Monitor fire safety plans and assist with visitor clearance in emergencies.

· Ensure staff and visitors’ safety and health.

· Manage security screens and CCTV.

· Control access to the loading dock and parking lot.

· Guide vendors and couriers upon arrival.

· Receive and log packages for museum departments.

· Provide visitor information via intercom when necessary.

Customer Service Duties

· Offer direction and respond to visitor inquiries in a professional manner.

Event & Seasonal Duties

· Set up and arrange museum spaces for events as directed.

· Remove and adjust furniture upon request.

· Maintain safe entrance areas by salting walkways during winter weather.

Required Certification, Key Attributes and Experience

· Minimum two years’ security experience working in a fast-paced environment.

· Valid Ontario Security License

· Standard First Aid and CPR – Level C

· High School Diploma

· Police clearance check required.

· Availability for Evenings, Weekends, and Statutory Holidays.

· Highly developed interpersonal and customer service skills, including conflict resolution, problem-solving, decision-making, and situational assessment.

· Must be punctual and responsible.

· Ability to work in a collaborative team environment with a friendly demeanor.

· Ability to handle emergency and non-emergency situations in a calm and professional manner.

· Comfortable sitting, standing and walking for an extended period of time.

· Ability to lift objects of up to 50 pounds.

· Fluency in reading and writing English.
