Job Summary

**Location: On-site, National Gallery of Canada, 380, Sussex Drive, Ottawa

Positions Available:

  • 1 part-time determinate position until April 30, 2026 (Rotational 12-hour shifts from 7:00-19:00 and 19:00-7:00 including weekends, and statutory holidays) with a minimum of 24 hours per week and the opportunity for full time hours and overtime. Note that part time positions are eligible for pension benefits.
  • 3 On-call positions (Rotational 12-hour shifts from 7:00-19:00 and 19:00-7:00 including weekends, and statutory holidays).

Job Summary:
The National Gallery is looking to expand its Protection Services Operations team with the flexibility of full-time, part time or on call hours. Under the direct supervision of the National Gallery's Duty Officer, the Protection Officer is responsible for monitoring and operating Fire, HVAC, CCTV and Security systems in a dedicated Security Operations Centre (SOC). They initiate and coordinate appropriate emergency response and control all security communications, including multiple radio channels, Email, chat-based collaboration hub, intercoms, and telephones. The Protection Officer conducts patrols of on and off-site locations, initiates investigations, inspections, writes incident reports, and provides emergency response while not posted in the SOC. The candidate may be required to carry out physical security escorts in a follow car with travelling exhibitions and will be involved with security functions during various Special Events and VIP functions. The National Gallery uses a hybrid security force with an in-house Protection Services division and a separate contract guard force. We are a client-facing institution, and you will be actively interacting with the public to resolve and de-escalate potential issues. Shifts are scheduled as far in advance as possible with the opportunity for additional shifts on short notice. Overtime shifts are allotted based on accrued hours and availability (Officers with the least number of hours are contacted first). We are growing our department and will be creating a pool of successful candidates for future opportunities.

Requirements

  • Post-secondary diploma/degree in a security related field; or an acceptable combination of education, experience, and training.
  • At least 12 months experience as a security guard or in a relevant field (law enforcement, military).
  • Experience working in a modern Security Operations Centre or in an investigative role would be an asset.
  • Exercise sound judgement, have keen observation skills, and possess the ability to remain calm under pressure.
  • Demonstrated ability to multitask and IT proficiencies beyond Microsoft Office and Teams.
  • Experience in customer service, de-escalation protocols, and dealing with difficult situations.
  • Knowledge of public safety, security procedures, and emergency protocols.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in both official languages (BBB level).
  • Must have an Ontario Security Guard licence (or be able to get one within 30 days), a valid drivers' licence, and current Basic First Aid / CPR.
